Glen Avon Growers Ltd
Glen Avon Growers is a family run business. The land in Cottingham was originally purchased by the current growers’ grandfather, who was a fruit and vegetable exporter in Holland.
In 1936, he immigrated to England from Holland with his wife and family, initially outdoor vegetables were grown, until his son took over the ownership of the land in the early 1950s. He started to erect glass on the seven-acre site and, by the late 1970s when the current grower came into the business, Glen Avon Growers had approximately five acres of glass and were producing cucumbers and tomatoes in the summer and lettuce in the winter.
In 1984, we moved over to 100% cucumber production and growing 100% on rock wool, the first and only nursery in the UK to make the move to substrate at that time.
Since 1984, we have steadily increased our glasshouse area from five acres to 10.5 acres.
In 2011, we changed over to producing 2.5 acres of tomatoes along with the cucumbers.
